A Perceptually Smooth Histogram Generation from the Hsv Color Space

We have done a detailed analysis of the properties of the HSV (Hue, Saturation and Intensity Value) color space. Our emphasis is on the visual perception of the color of an image pixel with the variation in hue, saturation and intensity values of the pixel. Using the results of this analysis, we determine relative importance of hue and intensity based on the saturation of a pixel. We apply this concept in histogram generation for content-based retrieval of images (CBIR) from large databases. The generated histogram retains a perceptually smooth transition of color between neighboring components. This enables us to perform a window-based smoothing of histograms during retrieval. The image retrieval results have been compared with a standard histogram generated from the RGB color space and also with the histogram used in the QBIC system.
